He's fabulous to watch - creepy, predatory, reptilian, transformed, in every action just a little bit wrong. In an effort to save himself, his girl, his mother (Toni Collette) and scores more, Charley goes into battle, enlisting self-styled vampire hunter Peter Vincent (David Tennant), really a cowardly Vegas illusionist of a Russell Brand-esque disposition, to help. Now he's desperate to avoid the uncool antics of former best friend and terminal dweeb Ed (Chistopher Mintz-Plasse), who's trying to convince him that next door lives a murderous vampire, in the form of husky night construction worker Jerry (Colin Farrell).īy the time Charley realises the truth and barricades his house with garlic, Jerry has him in his ruthless, creatively barbaric sights.

Here, local teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) has had the good fortune of moving up the social ladder when his skin cleared and high school alpha female Amy (Imogen Poots) showed interest. The city is already otherworldly, comes alive at night, is normally populated by temporary workers and blow-ins, and contains the creepiest thing of all, manufactured suburban compounds in the middle of nowhere. Put this baby - here, 1985's Fright Night - in the good hands of screenwriter Marti Noxon (veteran of that other landmark vampire franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Australian film director Craig Gillespie ( Lars and the Real Girl, United States of Tara), who clearly has some affinity for the weird, and we'll be properly excited.įright Night (2011) has the great vampire-story setting of Las Vegas. Parental Guide: R rating (bloody horror violence, language, including some sexual references).Give us a film to which we attach some pleasant nostalgia yet not enough critical status to warrant preciousness, and we may be up for the remake. Starring: Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette and Christopher Mintz-Plasse screenplay by Marti Noxon, based on the 1985 film by Tom Holland produced by Michael De Luca, Michael J.

If enough people consider his "Fright Night" performance bloody good, his star might rise again. After misses such as "The New World," "Miami Vice," "Ondine" and "The Way Back," the 39-year-old Irish actor, who is part of the ensemble in the successful summer comedy "Horrible Bosses," desperately needs an above-the-title hit. As played by Farrell, the dark and dangerous Jerry is more likely to be in an edgy vampire work like "True Blood" than a moody franchise like "Twilight."įor Farrell, whose work here is more than adequate, "Fright Night" ranks as something different for the once-promising actor.

Gillespie obviously prefers a leaner and meaner approach as he transforms Jerry into a figure more like a brutish serial killer than a sophisticated vampire. In the first "Fright Night," directed by Tom Holland, the vampire, wonderfully played by Chris Sarandon, who makes a deliciously welcome cameo appearance, is more of a dangerous romantic figure like Frank Langella in "Dracula."

They include flirting with his hardworking single mom (Toni Collette of "The Sixth Sense") and setting his sights on Charley's pure girlfriend, Amy (Imogen Poots of "28 Weeks Later").įans of the original should be interested in the way director Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl") alters the personality of Jerry. The creature of the night finds his life slightly complicated by virginal Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), a high school horror fan who recognizes Jerry's vampire habits. In the Las Vegas-set story, a vampire, Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell of "In Bruges"), moves into a seemingly quiet neighborhood where he hopes to keep his casket hidden in his basement, feed on the unsuspecting suburbanites, and then move on to find more fresh meat. That's especially true in the numerous middle-of-the-night sequences where the dark pop-off-the-screen process makes some of the action more difficult to see. A remake of a 1985 vampire favorite could be described as having too much night and not enough fright.ĭespite that, "Fright Night" provides some funny moments and mild chills for audiences of such fare, but the 3-D process doesn't help.
